I am Simon Roy Hughes, and I have lived in Scandinavia since 1991, northern Norway since 1992. I hold a Norwegian Cand. philol. post-graduate degree from the University of Tromsø, and a post-graduate diploma in education from Bodø University College (now Nord University). Making Norwegian and Scandinavian folk narratives available to the English-speaking world is somewhat of a monomania, and to this end, I publish volumes of folklore in English translation. I fully intend to continue in the same vein until either there’s nothing left to publish or I'm no longer around to publish it.
I have published work in Gramarye, the journal of the Chichester Centre for Fairy Tales, Fantasy and Speculative Fiction, and my translations and research have been featured on The Singing Bones Podcast (sadly dormant), Dan Scholz's Folktale Project, the Folklore Thursday website, The Mythos Podcast (current status undetermined), and Rory's Fireside Fairy-tales live streams. I have hitherto shied away from appearing in video or audio, so who knows what that would be like?
Where I may be found
(last updated 2024-04-20)
Here is an updated list of where you may find me and my work online:
Mastodon
- @SimonRoyHughes@thefolklore.cafe
I spend most time on Mastodon. If you need to contact me, do it there.
Ko-fi
- Simon Roy Hughes on Ko-fi
You will always get the best deal (best price for you; best royalty for me) by buying one of my ebooks directly from me on Ko-fi.
Lulu
- Paperbacks on Lulu
If you would rather buy your Norwegian folktales and legends from a retailer that doesn’t want your soul, then consider using Lulu.
Amazon
- Amazon.co.uk
- Amazon.com
Most people don’t think twice before buying a book from Amazon; I shall therefore refrain from thinking twice (out loud) before selling books on Amazon.
- Norwegian Folktales on Instagram
In a probably vain attempt at getting one of the most aggressive social media algorithms to sell some of my books, I have recently created an Instagram account.
- Norwegian Hulder Tales and Folk Legends
I have a (sadly neglected) Facebook page.
Bluesky and Threads
- Norwegian Folktales on Bluesky
- Norwegian Folktales on Threads
Representation on the other algorithm-driven social media du jour.
